"If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance!" - George Bernard Shaw

Fear and fire...

With the full moon of Taurus AND Halloween, we're faced with the fear of not just witches and goblins but of loss and destruction as these fires have ravaged our surrounding neighborhoods. What would you take? What are we left with when all of our material items perish? Family, friends, loved ones, our health and our spirit. These are the things that in the end, matter. Let us be reminded. Life is too short to not practice gratitude everyday and to not feel alive in every moment possible. Live, love, dance.

Fear/Stress and Health
Prevent Disease: Learn to Relax

If attaining peace of mind were as simple as reminding ourselves to relax whenever we feel agitated, the majority of us would be blissed-out most of the time. When faced with fear or stress, these are some simple techniques you can do anywhere. Do them and save your health! Like any other worthwhile skill, though, relaxation takes practice.

What can we do to deepen our ability to drop into a state of relaxation and ease? How can we connect with our inner state of peace when our outer lives are awash in stress and chaos? These suggestions can help you make your way back to balance and tranquility.

Exhale. One of the best ways to bring yourself back down to earth is to lengthen your exhalations. This form of breathing-as prescribed in the Yoga Sutra-encourages the nervous system to become calm and quiet, moving the body into a more restful state of being.

Focus your mind. Sometimes when the world sends us spinning, we want to do nothing more than drop into an easy chair and stare into space. But this approach often gives the brain free rein to continue its obsessive and agitated thinking. Instead, try focusing your mind in a constructive and engaging way: Practice a challenging physical activity, something that absorbs your mind.

Minimize external stimulation. Turn off the television, unplug the telephone, and dim the lights- turn down the volume of your life, remembering that outer calm nurtures inner calm.

Substitute positive thoughts for negative ones. The ancient yogic sage Patanjali counseled that when we are disturbed by negative thought patterns, we can recover our balance by inviting peaceful thoughts into our minds. So the next time you find yourself reeling with an agonizing fear or a depressing thought, notice the negative habit, toss it out, and use your creativity to develop a more positive outlook on the world.

Seek out laughter. There's nothing more stress-busting than a first-class belly laugh. Call your funniest friend, rent a comedy on video, or attempt a complicated dance move that will likely leave you swaying and splattering to the floor. Some dance moves are so ridiculously difficult (and, let's face it, funny-looking), how could you not laugh?

Practice, practice, practice. Like fine wine, relaxation improves over time. Even if you don't happen to feel completely blissed-out after a yoga or dance class today, you are priming the body for quiet and ease tomorrow. Repeatedly practicing restful postures greases the wheel of relaxation, so you will be able to quickly and easily drop into a deep state of ease someday in the future.

FEATURED CLASS FRIDAY 11/2 7:00PM
Exotic Dance Workout with Corinne

An exploration into a woman's sensual being- An exercise class that incorporates exotic dance, floor work, chair routines and cardiovascular movements. This class will not only empower women's confidence, self-esteem and sensuality but will also provide you with a challenging work-out.

*High-heels/stilletto's highly recommended.

Corinne's love for the arts started at the young age of three when she was enrolled in dance classes. Her education at such an early age in ballet, jazz, hula, salsa, mambo and modern dance, although was short-lived, enlighten a passion and love for performance. With a drive to entertain, she continued performing as an actor in theater, film and television mediums. Even though she was performing, a deep void still remained. When the opportunity to audition as a dancer/cheerleader for the Florida Titan Semi- Pro Football team presented itself, Corinne couldn't pass up the chance. She performed for the team a full season and again ignited the dance fire from within. Corinne began performing in several music videos and dance clubs around Miami Beach. And later became an Exotic, Pole, Matt and Lap Dance instructor at several different studios in South Florida. "To be able to incorporate the things you love in life and do them all as a career, is the most rewarding experience. And the most satisfying feeling when teaching Exotic dancing is seeing the empowerment, confidence, sensuality, and self- esteem changes my clients endure."

Dance Event
Ten Chi, the North American Premiere

Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal

Widely regarded as the most influential and controversial choreographer of her time, German-born Pina Bausch has practically invented "dance theater," fusing elements of American musical theater, vaudeville and political cabaret into mesmerizing and bittersweet meditations on the human condition. Now for the first time in eight years, "the uncrowned empress of modern dance" (Newsweek) returns to Los Angeles with a work many are calling her most stunning masterpiece to date. Created in Japan in 2004, Bausch's poetic Ten Chi is the most recent in a series of what might be called choreographic travelogues-works deeply informed and inspired by the countries and regions where they are created. On a stage decorated with cherry blossoms and a whale fin, the skilled dancers of Tanztheater Wuppertal explore with empathy and humor the sounds, sights, joys, and paradoxes of modern Japanese culture.

Royce Hall, Nov. 8-11th
