New Class: Polynesian Heartbeat
Free Demo Saturday 9/19 @ Noon
Dance your way to the South Pacific and join our new teacher, Hina, in a brand new Saturday class: Polynesian Heartbeat! From the islands of Polynesia come some of the most beautiful and memorable styles of dance. You will begin in the islands of Hawai'i by learning basic hula footwork to the beat of the ipu(gourd). You will then incorporate everything from feet placement, graceful hands, swaying hips, and facial expression to "tell a story" dancing to a Hawaiian mele (song). Then we travel to the islands of Tahiti to "shake things up" to the faster beat of the to'ere (drum). Come and enjoy these fun, graceful dances of the Pacific!
FREE DEMO CLASS
Saturday 7/19
12 Noon
Hina's dance background began at the age of 3 in her native homeland of Hawai'i where she learned hula. At 18 she began performing as a soloist for one of the top Polynesian companies and lu'au shows in Hawai'i (Tihati's Drums of the Pacific at the Hyatt). Now, as an accomplished hula and polynesian dancer, she feels blessed to have had the opportunity to travel and perform all over the world . From Vegas to Japan, Texas to Tonga, and the East Coast of New York (Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade) to the Far East of Egypt, she has shared her native dances in front of royalty, celebrities, and people of all cultures. Today, she still travels often abroad and locally and can be seen performing at everything from restaurants and weddings to theater and feature films. In the past few years she has also enjoyed teaching hula at UCLA, performing on Celebrity Cruises (to Hawai'i, Tahihi, and New Zealand) as well as dancing with several professional groups who's styles range from Polynesian to Bellydance, to Brazilian Samba. Hina exudes passion, grace and love for dance in every style she performs. As a former Hawaiian immersion school teacher, she is fluent in Hawaiian language. Growing up on Maui and also having a BA in Hawaiian studies (minor in Linguistics), she is proud and happy to share her culture though the beauty of hula. |

Contemporary Corner
Rainbow Arabia
Every week in Jasmine's Contemporary Ballet class (Wednesdays 6:30 PM), she features ecelctic new music from different indie artist performing locally- this week is Rainbow Arabia:
"martha graham once told me to pay attention to the tiny bones in my wrist, for they are the miracle of life. to look at the way my ear rests on my head, for it is the miracle of life and dance is a celebration of that miracle. i think she's crazy beautiful. like arabia, midnight and silk. i suppose my miracle happened 25 years ago to this very day, when x and x became an equation of a woman, a dialogue of movement, a celebration. so come light a candle, spank a booty or two and celebrate birth, dance, music, and intimacy. we are scientists with huge half lives and atomic spines. we study gravity and thank god for evolution. it may take another 25 years, but this wednesday night we face the desert storm, turbans in hand, we march elated, headed for the fall. Rainbow Arabia, playing friday night at Bordello downtown with Hecuba and We Are the World, will be our guides. Come out, it may be the best class yet. bring a cupcake!" -jasmine
